THE MEME, EXPLAINED
THE SAM ALTMAN
RAM MEME.
In late October 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made a remark about DRAM and local AI that spread quickly online. This page summarizes what was said, what it does and doesn't mean, and where the meme came from. NotYourRAM is a satirical, independent project, not affiliated with OpenAI.
What was said
The remark came in an episode of the Cheeky Pint podcast, hosted by John Collison, in a conversation about memory and GPU supply constraints. Altman said many people assume local inference solves the data-center problem because open-source models can run on personal computers. From a global allocation perspective, he argued, it is “quite terrible” for everybody to hold a share of the world's limited DRAM supply in their own machine.
The line that travelled furthest was about utilization: that this memory is used “5% of the time,” and that in a supply-constrained environment you want maximum utilization in the cloud. The full passage is in the published transcript; read it in context rather than relying on screenshots.
What the number does and doesn't mean
“…being used 5% of the time.”Short excerpt, Sam Altman, Cheeky Pint transcript
- It is about time, not capacity. As quoted, it describes how often DRAM is in use, not what fraction of installed gigabytes a program has allocated. These are different measurements.
- No source was given for the figure in the passage, and “used” is not defined. Idle-time, access activity and allocated memory can all differ widely.
- Computers use RAM for more than local AI. Operating systems cache files, browsers keep tabs warm, and games, editors and virtual machines all reserve memory so things feel instant. Idle capacity is partly by design.
NotYourRAM does not measure usage. Every figure on the site is typed in by the person who declares it, and is unverified.
Why it became a meme
Memory prices and availability were already a sore point for people buying PCs and building servers. Hearing the head of a major AI company suggest that RAM in personal computers is better off in data centers, in a discussion about scarce supply, landed badly with many. Critics also noted that the argument benefits a company selling cloud inference; PCMag UK called it self-serving. Engadget pointed out that he was talking specifically about local inference.
The response was predictable: screenshots of idle task managers, jokes about “not your RAM,” and the rallying cry Your RAM. Your rules.
How NotYourRAM works
- Add a device and declare its RAM in gigabytes, type and whether you are using it.
- Optionally publish an anonymous collection page and share a card.
- The site totals the declared RAM marked “not using it.”
